Prosody and action formation across languages: the case of next-turn repetitions

Ort: Raum 1.28 des Instituts für Deutsche Sprache (IDS) We present data and preliminary results from an ongoing project looking at next-turn repetitions across five languages (e.g. A: ‘Yesterday I went to the movies with Mary’ > B: ‘You went with Mary?’ > A: ‘Yes’). These repetitions can accomplish different interactional work, from checking one’s understanding of what is said, to expressing surprise at it, to questioning its acceptability. Our goal is to examine how intonation and prosody contribute to these pragmatic distinctions, together with grammatical features such as particles and morphosyntax. In this talk, we focus on two of the five languages in our sample - Italian and Finnish - and offer some cross-linguistic observations emerging from their comparison.
