Program Area "Interaction"

Head of program area: Prof. Dr. Arnulf Deppermann, deppermann (at) ids-mannheim.de

The projects in the program area "Interaction" focus on research on the contemporary use and variation of spoken German and the analysis of language use in social interaction. Research topics are

  • language-specific, regional and situational variation of spoken German as well as language change due to migration. These aspects are analyzed with regard to phonetical, (morpho-)syntactic, lexical, pragmatic, interactional and rhetorical aspects;
  • the coordination of verbal and bodily-spatial resources in social interaction;
  • the role of interaction in the accomplishment of social and psychological phenomena and the social and cognitive design of actions. All projects work with empirical methods: Interactional Linguistics, Conversation Analysis, Ethnography, phonetic measurement techniques and corpus linguistic methods.
