Corpus Query System

Corpus query systems are needed to manage and access large collections of texts such as DeReKo for linguistic research purposes. They enable users to pose complex queries and to present scientific findings in various different ways in addition to allowing quantitative analyses of text data.

The IDS has a longstanding tradition of providing such systems:

  • REFER (1983-1991)
  • COSMAS I (1992-2004)
  • COSMAS II (2003-today)
  • KorAP (since 2015 IDS-internally and since May 2017 also externally)

Project assignments

The project which started in 2015 will gradually combine the research done on the current IDS research system, COSMAS II, and on its future successor system, KorAP.

The objectives of the project are:

  • Further development of KorAP
  • Maintenance and servicing of COSMAS II
  • User support for COSMAS II and KorAP
  • Supporting COSMAS-II-users to make the transition to KorAP in the course of the next years

Seamless Transition from COSMAS II to KorAP

One of the most important aims of the project is to make the transition from COSMAS II to KorAP as smooth as possible for users. A  prerequisite for that is that COSMAS II will still be in operation for another 2 years after the implementation of all COSMAS II features in KorAP. Users will be informed about the decommisioning of the COSMAS II service 2 years in advance via e-mail and through the COSMAS II website. As at 1st June 2017 it cannot yet be foreseen, when notification will be issued, since KorAP is still in test mode and not all COSMAS II features have been implemented.

Further Development and Maintenance of COSMAS II During Transition Period

Since KorAP already is a high priority task for all COSMAS II developers, only previously planned improvements will be made to COSMAS II during the transition period. Although maintenance and user support continue to be ensured, temporary bottlenecks may occur.

We ask COSMAS II users for their understanding. In any case all users will be informed of upcoming changes and new features at an early stage via e-mail and the COSMAS II website.
