To test the usability of the new design of the user interface of OWID and to evaluate the possibilities of this method for online dictionary usage research, we conducted an eye tracking study in collaboration with the Mannheim Eye Lab in August/September 2011. A total of 39 persons participated. Each test person received a test description and various tasks that could be solved using several OWID screenshots. The following figures show some examples.
Figure 1: Heat-Map for the instruction “Please have a look at the following screenshot of the homepage of OWID and try to orient yourself.”
Figure 2: Heat-Map for the instruction “Please have a look at the screenshot of the homepage of OWID again and try to find out which dictionaries are included in OWID”
Figure 3: Scan path of one participant regarding the following instruction: “You will be presented with a screenshot of a word entry. Please find out which word is described”
Figure 4: Scan path of one participant regarding the following instruction: “You will be presented with the same screenshot of a word entry again. Please find out from which dictionary the entry comes from”
