Project "Multimodal Interaction"

Language and other physical modalities of communication

Team: Prof. Dr. Arnulf Deppermann, PD Dr. Axel Schmidt

This project deals with the relationship between language and other (bodily) resources in the organization of interaction and the constitution of meaning. On the one hand, it  focuses on the temporal relations (e. g. of projection, preparation, extension) in which language is coordinated simultaneously and sequentially with other modalities in the production of action. For example, actors often first have to adopt certain bodily and spatial positions of co-orientation towards one another or in relation to objects in order to be able to communicate verbally and gesturally with one another in a finely coordinated manner. On the other hand, we analyse whichprinciples apply to the mutual substitutability and functional-semiotic specialization of language vs. other modalities (especially gestures) dependent on common ground and activity types in interaction.
